  • Many on that list are City employees - and specifically appointed division directors. Buying their re-appointments perhaps?

I guess this is really a list of the "loyalty" and "unconditional love" the Mayor referred to in his "victory speech" against the haters!

  • I noticed Bobby Todd was on the list of folks Herenton paid. Wasn't he the MPD commander that investigated Andrea Herenton's accident that killed Micheal Simon?

I believe drivers that witnessed the accident said Andrea appeared drunk and was traveling at a high rate of speed yet Todd ticketed Micheal for the accident. I believe Andrea Herenton also settled the accident out of court later for a large sum of money. Todd was involved in another accident fixing report incident and got diversion without any jail time. Funny how things work out huh?

Also notice that a few city contractors donated to Herenton.

  • Hey Joe,

Looks like the Mayor is getting ready to pay back those "loyal" police officers he mentioned in his victory speech. More appointed positions! They already have precinct inspectors - why do they need precinct commanders unless it is to take care of Willie's buddies?? This will have NO affect on crime - but it will add to the already bloated appointee budget/list!

Letter to Council Members Concerning Memphis Crime

City Council Chairman, Tom Marshall, sent a letter to his fellow council members concerning crime, following Mayor Herenton's news conference about the state of crime in the city.

"The Action Plan for the Final 90 Days of 2007 did not include an item to address crime. Memphis metropolitan area violent crime statistics for 2006 earned our community the ominous title of the most dangerous city in America and morale among Memphis Police Officers is at an all time low.

After recent discussions with Police Director Larry Godwin and the Administration on ways the Council could assist the Police Department in crime fighting efforts, the following item has been added to the Action Plan. The proposal is for ten additional command staff appointments to be made by the Police Director. These positions will be Precinct Commanders and will allow greater visibility and accountability in crime fighting initiatives at the precinct level.

Public Safety Chairman Jack Sammons has agreed to expedite the process and bypass the Public Safety Committee and refer the matter directly to the Personnel, Intergovernmental & Annexation Committee for consideration next Tuesday, October 16, 2007."
